The important skill is choosing the part of the chain that deserves automation first. Find the bottleneck
Watch one complete order before buying an upgrade. Is the axe taking too long to supply raw wood? Is a processing machine waiting for logs? Is furniture finished but unable to reach the customer? Does distribution pause because the output has no destination? The answer identifies the bottleneck. A faster machine cannot solve a missing input, and a better axe cannot solve a jammed delivery route.
Write the chain in four words before changing it: source, process, craft, distribute. Add the actual item names from your current screen beside those words. It is useful for testing a new tree, checking whether a patch changed an input, and recovering when a machine or delivery route is blocked. The game is single-player, so there is no teammate who can keep the manual side moving while you inspect an automation problem. A clear workshop is therefore part of reliability, not only decoration.
Choose the first reinvestment
Spend early money on the action that improves the next repeatable cycle. A tool upgrade is attractive when gathering is the slowest step. A machine upgrade is attractive when a processing queue is always full. A distribution improvement is attractive when finished furniture is waiting to be shipped. A character upgrade can be the right choice when movement, strength, stamina, or interaction is the limiting factor. The Store page confirms character improvement and powerful upgrades, but it does not publish a universal purchase order.
Use a three-column note: current delay, upgrade that could change it, and proof after purchase. If the delay remains, do not buy the same category again just because it sounds stronger. Trace the chain and test the adjacent stage. This approach remains useful when the launch economy changes because it is based on observation rather than a fixed number.
Build for inspection
Place machines so that inputs and outputs can be seen without crossing the entire workshop. Leave a walking lane around the interaction side, keep similar inputs together, and make the delivery direction obvious. The player owns the workshop layout, so the guide cannot claim a single official blueprint. It can recommend readable conventions: separate raw storage from finished goods, mark a machine that needs a bought component, and avoid stacking loose items where a prompt becomes difficult to target.
If a line stalls, inspect the physical state before rebuilding it. Look for a missing input, a full output, a part that fell out of reach, an interaction waiting for the player, or a delivery destination that has not been unlocked. A current community discussion mentions the desire to recall loose parts; use that as a failure case to record, not as proof of a built-in recall command. Capture the exact prompt and position if you report a problem.
Distribution and customer value
Automation only pays when output reaches a customer. The official loop includes loading handcrafted chaos, shipping it to the nearby city, earning money, and reaching new customers. That makes distribution a real system rather than a final animation. Before expanding production, confirm that the current route accepts the object, the city or customer is available, and the item is not reserved for another blueprint or mission.
Furniture sets can grant bonus cash according to the Store page, but the page does not provide a complete list of set bonuses. A fast line that produces individual items may be worse than a slower line that completes a set and earns a bonus payout. Test one complete set, record the displayed result and date, then decide whether the bonus justifies the additional storage and processing steps. Never turn a launch-week screenshot into a permanent profit table.
New areas and automation scope
Expansion changes the material map. The game promises new areas, new tree types, a nearby city, secrets, and character upgrades. When a new region opens, treat it as a new source audit: identify the tree or component, trace its first processing step, and decide whether the existing line can handle it. Do not merge stone, metal, and electric trees into ordinary wood until the current interface shows that they share an output.
The World hub covers exploration boundaries, while Resources keeps material notes separate from machine notes. This separation makes a later database safer. If an update changes a machine, the resource page can keep the source observation while the Updates page records the official change.
Update-aware troubleshooting
Launch-week automation guides need a date. Official Steam News lists Hotfix #1, Hotfix #2, and Hotfix #3 on 2026-08-07. Hotfix #1 adds a GPU Occlusion Culling toggle and fixes a main-menu Load button. Hotfix #2 adds frame limiting, removes the firewood minigame, and fixes a tutorial-message save edge case. Hotfix #3 fixes a possible softlock after building the cannon foundation. These notes can explain a changed setting or stuck sequence, but they do not establish a general performance solution for every computer.
If a machine behaves differently after an update, check the official announcement first, note the AppID, and record whether you are on the default Steam branch. A BuildID is not a public semantic version. Do not copy Demo behavior into the base game or claim native Linux, macOS, Steam Deck, controller, or co-op support from an automation screenshot.
A reliable automation checklist
Observe one manual cycle, name the bottleneck, buy one targeted upgrade, and watch the next cycle to confirm the change. Keep raw, processed, crafted, and distributed items distinguishable. Leave access around machine prompts. Save before a major construction step when the current build allows it. If an object becomes unreachable or a foundation softlocks, record the exact case and consult the dated Updates page before rebuilding the entire workshop. That is enough to grow from axe work into a furniture line without inventing an efficiency meta that the evidence cannot support.
